Share a Pot: Nurturing Community and Well-being for Singapore’s Elderly

Posted September 19, 2023

In our rapidly changing world, technology and urbanization can sometimes lead to disconnection. As Pope Francis warns us in Laudato Si’: “Life gradually becomes a surrender to situations conditioned by technology, itself viewed as the principal key to the meaning of existence.” (110)

Communities in Singapore are committed to maintaining their values of care and respect despite the dizzying pace of change. These communities are helping elderly sisters and brothers to “age in place” for as long as possible.

This compassionate and respectful approach ensures aging people can continue living in familiar surroundings and communities that hold a wealth of memories and connections.

One innovative initiative helping prolong and maintain this sense of belonging in the elderly is the “Share a Pot” program, brought to life by the forward-thinking minds at Yishun Health.

The Heart of “Share a Pot”

“Share a Pot”, which started in 2014, creates a sense of community, promotes fitness, and provides nutritional support to older adults.

At various locations across the island, seniors gather to exercise in a group, enhancing their physical well-being through shared activities. Afterwards, they unite around a hearty serving of nutritious soup, reminiscent of family gatherings around a steaming pot.

This simple act of sharing nourishment and conversation has a far-reaching impact on their overall well-being. Through these gatherings, the seniors form connections, build lasting friendships, and break through the isolation that often plagues the elderly.

A Powerful Antidote to Loneliness

The success of “Share a Pot” is evident not only in the numbers—over 30 venues across Singapore—but also in the personal stories that have emerged.

Seniors like 84-year-old Mdm Ho Luan Eng share their experiences of improved health and newfound connections that have brightened their lives.

“For a year, I did not get to go out as I was sick and had a fall. After coming here to exercise, I have become healthier. I was able to make friends and talk to them too!”
– Mdm Ho Luan Eng, 84 years old

“Share a Pot” Brings Nutrition and Connection

Initiatives like “Share a Pot” are vital in creating caring, human-powered ecosystems that embrace and uplift everyone. It is also a powerful reminder that every neighborhood has the potential to become a haven where individuals are known, acknowledged, and supported.

The story of “Share a Pot” is a testament to the transformative power of small actions and big hearts, reminding us that when we come together, we can create a world where everyone thrives.
