Laudato Si’ Week, an annual event inspired by Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ encyclical on the environment and human ecology, ignited discussions and actions around the world. Throughout the weeklong event, May 21 – May 28, we were reminded in a special way of the urgent need for collective action to address the pressing environmental challenges we face.

This year’s events brought together individuals, communities, and organizations to celebrate our interconnectedness with nature and renew our commitment to protecting our planet. Below are some highlights and key takeaways from this inspiring celebration.

Engaging the Global Community

Laudato Si’ Week 2023 witnessed an unprecedented level of global participation, with events organized in various countries and communities, including an invitation to host a screening of the film The Letter and join the Laudato Si’ Action Platform.

People from diverse backgrounds came together to deepen their understanding of ecological issues and explore practical solutions. Faith-based organizations, educational institutions, environmental groups, and individuals united in a common goal of promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Inspiring Youth Engagement

Youth engagement and empowerment were key themes throughout the week. Young people around the world organized events, workshops, and campaigns, showcasing their passion for environmental justice.

To keep the Laudato Si’ Week momentum going inspired by the actions of young people, the Laudato Si’ Action platform hosted a webinar on May 31, Revitalizing Our Church Communities Through Ecological Education, featuring students from Scotland, India, Philippines, Japan, Portugal, and Chile. Climate-related events focused on raising awareness about the impacts of global warming and advocating for sustainable policies. The role of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction strategies were highlighted as key components of climate action.

Caring for Our Common Home

Laudato Si’ Week also emphasized the importance of safeguarding biodiversity and preserving our natural resources. Discussions centered on the destruction of ecosystems, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and the need for sustainable land and water management. Participants explored ways to protect and restore ecosystems, recognizing that a healthy environment is vital for the well-being of present and future generations.

Promoting Ecological Spirituality

At the heart of Laudato Si’ Week is the call for an ecological conversion, recognizing the intrinsic value of all creation.
