The following is a guest blog by Sister Jelza Zorzo of the Religious Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Ecological Christmas is an event that takes place at the end of the year in the green area of the Recanto Coração de Jesus (RCJ), situated in the city of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil.

This space belongs to the Religious Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

As the event approaches, decorations are prepared to adorn the garden and trees throughout the green space, using materials that would otherwise be thrown away, such as plastic bottles and CDs. To ensure the event is as waste-free as possible, juice and soda are served in souvenir cups that each person takes home with them. Those who take part in the event are invited to donate a non-perishable food item, which is then provided to families and/or institutions that need it.

Ecological Christmas is open to the general public with the objective of both evangelizing and raising ecological awareness through the beauty of music, environmentally-focused messages, mesmerizing lights, and captivating staging.

This celebration of our common home with the community is also a plea to almighty God, asking for the conversion of those who cause hunger, misery, wars, and environmental degradation throughout the world.

As Pope Francis said in his message to mark the launch of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform:  “From God’s hands we have received a garden, we cannot leave a desert to our children.”
