Engage with the Message of Laudate Deum

Through the powerful messages permeating Laudate Deum, Pope Francis has striven “to clarify and complete” what he began with Laudato Si’. (LD 4)

The Holy Father calls upon all of us to acknowledge the urgency of our climate crisis and to engage in a more caring and sustainable approach towards our common home.

Uniting Environmental Thought Leaders

The Global Georgetown webinar titled “Caring for the Environment and Each Other: Pope Francis’ Follow-up to Laudato Si’” brought together environmental advocates across diverse backgrounds. From Laudato Si’ Action Platform director John Mundell’s updates on the Vatican’s initiatives to Jose Aguto’s insightful experience with the Catholic Climate Covenant and the EPA to Sharon Lavigne’s commendable efforts in environmental justice in Louisiana, the discussion was both enriching and enlightening. The dialogue, moderated by Kim Daniels, explores the theology and ethics of our environment.

Global Leaders and Advocates Respond to Laudate Deum

Lindlyn Moma of Laudato Si’ Movement greeted participants for this webinar entitled,  “Presentation of the Apostolic Exhortation: Laudate Deum”, with a pivotal quote from the document, underscoring that “the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point.” (LD 2). 

Cardinal Michael Czerny emphasized the climate crisis and the scientific consensus on planetary decay. Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, discussed the 1.5-degree safe operating space for humanity. Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative Chair Tzeporah Berman talked about multilateralism and Cop28, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Young climate activist Ridhima Pandey stressed the severity of environmental disasters and called for immediate action, reflecting on her interactions with Pope Francis. Archbishop Justin Welby interpreted the document as a call to all humanity to address and heal the environmental wounds.

The Economy of Francesco global gathering was held on October 6th in Assisi. Pope Francis, during his greeting in 2022, said to the world’s young economists and entrepreneurs, “Please, don’t leave us undisturbed, give us an example!” 

TheEconomy of Francesco has responded with a continuous effort to address pressing challenges like inequalities, environmental crises, and more. The global gathering included interactive sessions, meditative moments, and contributions from over 30 countries. The highlight was Pope Francis’ address, which once again motivated the attendees and those watching online.

Voices from Science, Youth, and Affected Communities

“Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation: Come Learn, Pray, Act!”, a webinar hosted by Catholic Climate Covenant and Laudato Si’ Movement, delved deep into Laudate Deum. Attendees were invited to offer our prayers for the state of creation and all those contributing to its preservation. Presentations illuminated the core themes of the apostolic exhortation, while voices from the scientific, youth, and communities most affected by the ecological crisis shared their perspectives.
