CEFAW WORKSHOP CHRISTIAN ETHICS OF FARMED ANIMAL WELFARE

Eric Charmetant (Centre Sèvres - Jesuit Faculties of Paris) and Estela Torres (Fraternity for Animal Respect)

09/06/2023 In Person

This workshop will present the work done by CEFAW to promote ethical and theological work within the churches on improving the welfare of farmed animals in conjunction with farmers and agricultural stakeholders. It will reflect on the investments, land use, education, preaching, retail choices, and animal consumption of church members and how these do or do not promote a fulfilled life for farmed animals.

This workshop will lay a theological and ethical foundation for animal flourishing, present tools for assessing farm animal welfare from a Christian perspective, and make recommendations for action. Indeed, Christians have a particular and important responsibility towards the large number of animals raised for food, whose lives are entirely in the hands of human beings. Many animals are currently raised in systems that limit their natural behavior and their ability to flourish as God’s creatures.

The pedagogy will encourage exchanges between the keynote speaker, the organizers, and the participants to promote ways of acting and thinking adapted to the French situation.

CEFAW is a three-year project in the UK, funded by the AHRC to develop a Christian farmed animal welfare ethic and a new theoretical/ethical framework for Christian institutions, with 13 institutional partners, including the main UK churches.
