A Young Generation with Potential

Posted July 29, 2024

Discover how the Sisters of Notre Dame in Bangalore lead school initiatives such as shoe donations and seed collections.

“It fills me with hope for the future of our Mother Earth when I see the youth actively engaged in these activities. Their enthusiasm is a ray of hope, encouraging others to contribute to the world. This young generation has the potential to restore our planet to its lush, green state.”

These are the words of Sr. Alpana, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, Our Lady of the Visitation Province, Bangalore, whose community has long been synonymous with dedication to education, service, and faith. Now, her community’s commitment extends to the environment, showcasing their work through the Laudato Si Action Platform.

Shoe Donation Drive: Caring for Creation

The Sisters of Notre Dame launched a Shoe Donation Drive. Students were encouraged to donate their used sports shoes instead of discarding them. This initiative reduced landfill waste and promoted education by providing necessary footwear to students in need.

Students donate shoes to recycle their footwear and reduce waste.

Mango Seed Collection: Promoting Sustainability

Another significant effort was the Mango Seed Collection. The entire school community collected and dried mango seeds, which were distributed to farmers through the Gram Samriddhi Foundation. This initiative aimed to collect 10 lakh mango seeds to be planted and grafted, benefiting poor farmers by increasing green cover, improving soil fertility, and enhancing biodiversity.

Educational Activities: Instilling Environmental Responsibility

Educational activities at Sophia High School also raised awareness about land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Students participated in placard-making and drawing competitions, while a plantation drive saw the planting of flowering plants on school grounds. The students also created seed balls to nurture at home, fostering a sense of personal responsibility for the environment
